Itinerary

Detailed itinerary

Day 1 Day 1: Cusco – Km 82 – Patallacta – Ayapata Camp

Start your unforgettable Inca Trail to Machu Picchu tour with an early morning pickup from your hotel in Cusco, Urubamba, or Ollantaytambo. After breakfast and meeting your trekking team, you will drive to Km 82, the official starting point of the famous Inca Trail hike. The first section of the trail is relatively easy and perfect for adjusting to the altitude while enjoying beautiful Andean scenery. Along the route, you will visit Patallacta, an important Inca archaeological site that once served as a checkpoint for travelers heading to Machu Picchu. After lunch, continue trekking through stunning mountain landscapes until you reach Ayapata Camp at approximately 3,300 m / 10,826 ft. This first day is the perfect introduction to one of the most iconic trekking tours in Peru.

Day 2 Day 2: Ayapata – Dead Woman’s Pass – Runcuraccay Pass – Chaquicocha

This is the most challenging and rewarding day of your Inca Trail 4 Days adventure. After an early wake-up with hot coca tea, begin the ascent to Dead Woman’s Pass, the highest point of the classic Inca Trail at 4,215 m / 13,829 ft. From the top, enjoy spectacular panoramic views of the Andes before descending into the Pacaymayu Valley for lunch. In the afternoon, continue climbing to the second pass near Runcuraccay, where you will explore another fascinating Inca site and admire dramatic waterfalls and mountain landscapes. Later, visit Sayacmarca, one of the most impressive archaeological sites along the route, before arriving at Chaquicocha Camp at around 3,600 m / 11,811 ft. This day is one of the highlights of any Cusco trekking tour and offers unforgettable scenery throughout the trail.

Day 3 Day 3: Chaquicocha – Phuyupatamarca – Intipata – Wiñay Wayna

Today is widely considered the most beautiful day of the Inca Trail to Machu Picchu. The trail follows gentle sections through the stunning cloud forest, where you can admire orchids, lush vegetation, and sweeping views of the Vilcabamba mountain range. Along the route, you may also enjoy distant views of Salkantay Mountain, one of the most iconic peaks in southern Peru. You will reach Phuyupatamarca, known as the “Town in the Clouds,” where the panoramic scenery is truly spectacular. Continue descending through ancient Inca stairways and visit Intipata, a remarkable set of agricultural terraces with amazing views over the Sacred Valley. Finally, arrive at Wiñay Wayna, one of the most beautiful and important archaeological sites before Machu Picchu. This campsite is the final stop before your grand entrance to the lost city of the Incas.

Day 4 Day 4: Wiñay Wayna – Sun Gate – Machu Picchu – Aguas Calientes – Cusco

The final day of your Machu Picchu hiking experience begins very early. After breakfast, walk to the checkpoint and continue your final stretch of the Inca Trail toward Inti Punku, the Sun Gate. This is the most anticipated moment of the entire trek, as you will enjoy your first breathtaking panoramic view of Machu Picchu at sunrise. From the Sun Gate, continue descending toward the citadel and reach the main panoramic viewpoint, where you can admire the famous postcard view of Machu Picchu. After taking photos, enjoy a guided tour of the most important areas of the archaeological sanctuary, including temples, terraces, religious sectors, and ceremonial spaces. Later, take the bus down to Aguas Calientes, where you will have time for lunch before boarding the train to Ollantaytambo and the private transfer back to Cusco. This final day completes one of the best Machu Picchu tours from Cusco and one of the most rewarding trekking adventures in Peru.
