What Is Rainbow Mountain?

Rainbow Mountain, known locally as Vinicunca or Montana de Siete Colores, is a striking geological formation at 5,200 metres above sea level in the Cusco region. Its colourful mineral stripes were exposed by glacier retreat over recent decades.

How Difficult Is the Hike?

The hike is classified as moderate to challenging due to the high altitude. Most visitors start from the trailhead at Cusipata at 4,330 metres and hike approximately 6 km round trip to the summit viewpoint.

How to Get to Rainbow Mountain from Cusco

Most tours depart Cusco at around 4:00 AM to arrive at the trailhead by 6:30 AM. The drive takes approximately 3 hours. Joining an organised tour is strongly recommended.

Best Time to Visit

May to October during the dry season offers the best visibility and trail conditions. During the wet season the path can be muddy and the summit is often covered in cloud.

Cost

Tour prices from Cusco range from USD $30 to $80 per person including transport and a guide. The entrance fee to the community area is approximately USD $3.

Essential Tips

  • Spend at least 2 days acclimatising in Cusco before the hike
  • Bring warm layers, a windproof jacket and sunscreen
  • Horses are available at the trailhead if needed
  • Start hiking as early as possible to avoid afternoon clouds
